Summer Holiday Financial Tips

Now the clocks have gone forward and we are well into spring, our thoughts may well be turning to getting away for some sun rather than having to endure another disappointing British summer!

Despite recent security threats and reports about the long-term damage to the environment, the desire to get away from it all is stronger than ever with us taking an average of 1.6 holidays per year (according to The Times, 2006). It’s not just how frequently we go away which puts us under increasing financial pressure but also the growing trend to take so-called ‘dream holidays’ every year.

According to a Halifax survey, 20% of respondents said that were likely to take a dream trip for no special reason with over half prepared to spend between ?1,000 and ?5,000 per person on these holidays.

It’s clear then that these halcyon days of sun, sea and sand have a price beyond the widely-debated cost to the environment. The annual holiday is almost seen as a given with more and more of us spending large amounts of money on lavish trips abroad just to “keep up with the Jones’”. Two or even three holidays a year to Europe and the Caribbean are now considered the norm with ?74bn being spent on holidays and spending money in 2006, according to Axa.

The pressure to overspend on holidays is intense and nowadays people think nothing of charging a holiday in the US or Australia to a credit card. The problem starts when the holiday is over and the dreaded credit card bills start landing on the mat! Only then do some people realize that they have spent beyond their means and the ‘holiday hangover’ starts to set in.

Tips to prevent the holiday hangover:

? Set a limit - Think about how much you can realistically afford before you decide where you are going and, more importantly, where the money will be coming from. Stick to this budget!

? Start saving - Put some money aside every month leading up to the holiday - don’t forget that most package holiday companies require the balance to be paid up to 12 weeks before departure. Try to put the same amount away and deposit the funds into a separate bank account to avoid the temptation to spend.

? Start shopping early - Buy holiday essentials little and often. Take advantage of special offers and avoid the ‘holiday rush’ period. Holiday essentials are often cheaper out of peak holiday season, so start your shopping then for the following year.

? Make use of offers - When booking holidays, take advantage of incentives for booking early or bag a bargain by booking a late package deal. Look out for free child places and remember to get quotes from several different sources to see if you can haggle the price down.

? Use credit wisely - If you do use your credit card on holiday, remember to start making payments on it as soon as you return. If possible, use your debit card for transactions (but remember these are also subject to additional charges) - avoid cash advances on credit cards at all costs as the interest rates are typically very high.

? Budget daily - Work out a daily budget of likely spend and try to stick to it while you are away. Don’t be tempted to blow the budget and put the daily meals on a credit card.

? Quality not quantity - Try to resist over-stretching yourself too much even if everyone else seems to be splashing out on foreign holidays. Remember, holidays are far better enjoyed when they are saved up for - there’s more to life than material wealth!

Holiday Insurance

According to Axa, we spent ?4.2bn on travel insurance in 2006 - Often overlooked, travel insurance is as important as sunscreen when going on a foreign holiday. However, all holiday insurance is not the same and prices differ widely, here are five top tips to help you get the best deal on travel insurance:

? Shop around - Don’t be pressured to take travel insurance out with your travel agent, it isn’t mandatory. There are sometimes better deals to be had on the high street from banks, retailers and even the Post Office

? Consider annual insurance - If you do go abroad more than once a year, it may be worthwhile purchasing annual rather than single trip travel insurance to cover all the trips you take in that year. Remember to make sure you purchase the correct type of cover, as a winter sports holiday usually requires additional cover.

? Already covered? - You may already have travel insurance - many premium bank accounts have value-added benefits such as travel cover as part of the package. Credit card companies also have tie-ins with travel insurance companies that may be available to cardholders. You may already have basic travel insurance as part of your benefits but may just be unaware so make sure you do your homework!

? Don’t pay for what you don’t need - If you only go abroad within Europe, opt for a policy that only covers Europe rather than a worldwide policy, as this will often be cheaper. Also, don’t pay for winter sports cover unless you actually need it.

? European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - A replacement for the old E111 form and a travel essential. Whilst not a substitute for adequate travel insurance, this card entitles the holder to free or discounted medical treatment in any EU country (including Switzerland). Cards are available online or by post.

Venus Flytrap Origins Uncovered

Venus Flytrap Origins Uncovered

In 1770, botanist John Ellis published the first description of “a new sensitive plant,” called Dionaea muscipula, or Venus flytrap.

Its leaf snaps shut in about half a second when an insect is lured to its bright red surface. Spikes protruding from the edges of the leaf form a narrow cage for the insect. The leaf swells to close the gap and secretes a fluid that digests the insect in about ten days. Then the leaf grows a little and opens up, ready for the next visitor.
Now, the origin of the voracious Venus flytrap has been uncovered. The flytrap, and one other carnivorous snap-trap plant which grows underwater, evolved from a more conventional relative that had sticky leaves.

Over time, the plants added elaborate structures and weapons such as trigger hairs and teeth to trap and immobilise their meaty prey, botanists say. Ultimately, the need to hunt and eat ever larger animals drove the plants” evolution, say the scientists.

Safety tips for play on equipment

funnel-ballgameGoing to the playground for fun and play is one of the most cherished experiences of being a child. It is here that children learn to interact, balance and coordinate. While children are busy picking up motor skills and social graces, parents get a much needed opportunity to catch up with each other. But, it only takes a moment’s carelessness or oversight for a trip to the playground to turn tragic. The National Safety Council estimates that more than 20,000 children require emergency hospital care every year due to avoidable injuries sustained in the playground.

Here are some tips that can help your child avoid a nasty cut or a bad fall while they play on the equipment in a park or playground.

Check whether the playground is safe for play. Playground surfaces should be soft enough to cushion falls. Hard, rough surfaces can lead to painful scrapes and injuries. Uneven surfaces are dangerous and must be avoided.

Playground equipment too must be checked for safety. Plastic and rubber are the best materials for toys as these are the least dangerous. Any equipment that children play on must be free of sharp edges. They must also have all the safety features in place so that a child is not inadvertently put in danger. For example, swings should have bucket seats so that small children do not fly out of these even when they swing hard. Slides must have safety handrails to keep the child safe. The surface of the slide should be smooth and without any cracks.

Children must only be allowed to play equipment that suits their age. For instance, tall swings and climbing equipment is suitable for children over the age of 5. Many pieces of equipment have safety features. These features must be put to use to ensure safety.

In addition to these, parents need to take extra care to see to it that their children are protected and safe.

-         Never leave the child unsupervised while they play on any equipment

-         Ensure that the child is old enough to play on the playground equipment before you let him or her use it. Children below the age of 5 should play on equipment that is less than 5 feet in height.

-         Ensure that the child knows how to play on the equipment safely.

-         Teach the child that there are certain rules to be followed in the playground while they play with other children

-         Check whether the playground has a soft padding that can help children avoid injury, like a sand pit or a pit with wood shavings

-         Ensure that children do not wear loose or uncomfortable clothes when they play on any equipment

-         Ensure that metal playground equipment does not have sharp edges and that it is not too hot while the child is playing on it

By taking precautionary steps to protect children, it is possible to help them enjoy their play to the maximum while minimizing chances of an injury.

Nano Technology

Nanotechnology, sometimes shortened to nanotech, refers to a field of applied science whose theme is the control of matter on an atomic and molecular scale. Generally nanotechnology deals with structures 100 nanometers or smaller, and involves developing materials or devices within that size.

Nanotechnology is an extremely diverse and multidisciplinary field, ranging from novel extensions of conventional device physics, to completely new approaches based upon molecular self-assembly, to developing new materials with dimensions on the nanoscale, or the scale of nothing, even to speculation on whether we can directly control matter on the atomic scale.

There has been much debate on the future implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology has the potential to create many new materials and devices with wide-ranging applications, such as in medicine, electronics, and energy production. On the other hand, nanotechnology raises many of the same issues as with any introduction of new technology, including concerns about the toxicity and environmental impact of nanomaterials, and their potential effects on global economics, as well as speculation about various doomsday scenarios. These concerns have lead to a debate among advocacy groups and governments on whether special regulation of nanotechnology is warranted.

MLM and the Current Financial Problems

There is a lot of talk and coverage from the media the last few months about the current financial problems the US economy is facing that threatens to drag the whole world into a global recession. But what will be the consequences of that crisis to the MLM industry?

Actually, the MLM network marketing industry is to benefit from all this turmoil for many reasons whether we dive into a recession or hopefully manage to avoid it. First let us take the worst case scenario that we do get into a recession or even a depression.

In that case, many corporations will start lay offs in a big scale and many people will find themselves unemployed, while others under reduced salary. Such things could lead to an increase in the people who are looking for opportunities in order to start a home based business and supplement their income. Of course the great increase won’t come for those who lost their job, as they would be desperately looking for a new job to survive, but from the rest. It would come from people who will keep their jobs, but would keep feeling a constant threat that their job is the next in the line if another round of lay offs would happen. Probably a percentage of them would be working under reduced salary, so they would have another incentive to start looking for alternatives to supplement their income, as probably their paycheck wouldn’t suffice.

Many MLM opportunities are poised to benefit from that influx of new members and many distributors would manage to fill their downlines fast and build networks that would give them passive income in the years to come.

But even if we hopefully manage to avoid a crisis and things would go back to normal, many people took their lesson from what little we have experienced till now. While not in a big scale we still had lay offs, and many people saw their investments in the stock market falling. Investments that were supposed to provide for them when they reach the age of retirement. Add to that that the decline in the house prices hurt a lot of people that were relying on the increasing value of their homes in order to draw equity from them through refinancing to cover a part of their expenses, and you realize how hard people were hit.

Under all this, it is natural that many people learned how dangerous is when you rely on others for your economic future and are going to seek for alternatives. Alternatives like having and running your own home based business instead of relying exclusively to employment for a source of income. And of course a percentage of them will get into MLM as it is offering many advantages that is very difficult to be found in other business models.

Knowledge is vital when it comes to building your home business in any multilevel marketing company and you should always allocate a percentage of your time to your training as it would define your future success.
